Sprawling fields of huge boulders give City of Rocks National Reserve its name and make it a haven for hikers, mountain bikers and rock climbers alike. While various trails within the park have different restrictions on the methods of travel used, there are plenty of trails for those on foot, bicyclists and horseback riders to explore. The towering rocks offer a variety of amazing sights, including the distinct shape of Window Arch, the unique surface pattern of Stripe Rock and towering Castle Rock, providing many climbing paths. Some of the huge boulders within the park stand over 300 feet tall, making a journey amongst them feel a bit like being the size of an ant. Hidden away on the south side of the state, near its border with Utah, the park is nearly a two-hour drive from any middling-sized town, making an overnight stay a good choice if possible: the park has 64 campsites and they can be reserved in advance.
Open daily year round.
Free. Overnight fee: $12 per night.
